Loving God and Loving Others

Someone once asked Jesus, “Teacher, what is the greatest commandment?

Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:36-39

This teaching from Jesus forms our vision for the church we hope to be. We want to love the way Christ loves. Out of this hope, our church focuses on three major pieces of growing in our faith together:

Worshiping God

Growing in Small Groups

Serving Others

Worshiping God

On Sunday mornings at 10:45am, we gather to worship God together. Our worship gatherings contain many elements meant to help us listen for the voice of Christ. There is music, prayer, silence, Scripture readings, meditations, a time of offering, a sermon, and communion. When the sermon is about to begin, elementary-school-aged children head to children’s church with trained, and screened volunteers. On the first Sunday of the month, the children are in the main worship gathering the entire time, and parts of that service are especially geared toward younger members because we value their presence with us in worship.

Growing in SMALL Groups

We have Small Groups that meet at different times and places. The idea behind these groups is to live life together and to learn to lift one another up in the everyday stuff of life. These Small Groups for about 90 minutes once a week, and are safe spaces for sharing struggles and triumphs, as well as a good place to grow in our faith. Being a part of a group is a great way to build deeper friendships within the church, which is really important to us. Even now, during COVID-19 social distancing, our groups are still meeting via Google Meet.

Another option to connect in a more intimate setting is before worship on Sunday mornings at 9:30am at our church building. At that time, we offer a LIFT (Life in Faith Together) class. This group eats breakfast together, and all ages are welcome, from babies to teenagers to the elderly. It’s a cross-generational time of sharing a meal and doing activities that cause us to deepen relationships and grow in our faith.

We also offer youth group for our pre-teens and teenagers on the first Sunday of the month at 6:00pm, a men’s breakfast the first Saturday of the month at Providence Newberg Medical Center at 8am, and occasional ladies’ teas.

Serving Others

We believe each of us should serve others in a way that brings us joy. Some people serve others by making coffee on Sunday mornings. Some serve others by delivering free over-the-counter meds to low-income families in our city. Some in our church serve meals on Wednesday nights to the those in need. Others serve by volunteering to landscape, mow, and weed around our church property. There are so many ways to serve others as a part of Newberg Nazarene Church, but no matter where or how we choose to serve, we believe that serving others is a Christlike way to love God and love others.

There are all sorts of ways for you to grow in your love for God and people, but here at Newberg Nazarene Church we really try to focus on these three areas in how we function as a community: Worship, Growing in Small Groups, and Serving Others.

If you’re interested in connecting with us, please email us, call us, or show up on a
